ENIGMAS OUT OF SPACE

If life exists only on this earth, then perhaps the gods are really dead, and creation but an idiot's tale. This is for man ultimate loneliness. For, if in his tinkering with atoms or other toys, he succeeds in destroying all life on the earth, he thereby destroys all life that is, and bequeaths a dead universe to the dead gods.

But there are those who have dreamed that life exists on other worlds. Many have tried to prove this, usually by hypothesis or analogy, occasionally by facts.

It must be admitted that there have been some startling astronomical observations. And there are certain other data which whisper that in the bleak void of space there are other islands where life has found a home. Strange tales of things beyond our planet have been told, and forgotten, since the days of the Chaldeans—or earlier.
